In this Ask a Mechanic segment, Billy the mechanic tells you what you need to know about getting your car Fall-ready.

With October being Car Care month, we’re kicking off Vehicle Mind’s Ask a Mechanic video series with Billy’s fall car maintenance checklist.

If you’re new to car ownership, this is a great starter list to get your car ready for colder temps! Read Billy’s recommendations and watch him in action below:

1. CHECK YOUR TIRES

In a study conducted, 60% of drivers admitted to rarely checking their car’s tire pressure. That’s a potential hazard as tires affect your ability to keep your car in control and brake safely, making tire inspection a must with fall in full swing. This is the right time of year to replace tires for the upcoming season!

2. GET AN OIL CHANGE

Cold weather can be very hard on engines as it can create a lot of wear and tear and corrosion over time. That’s why getting good quality oil running through your engines helps lubricate and protect your engine from corrosion! It’s all about preventing premature engine wear.

3. CHECK YOUR HEATING SYSTEM

What do you need to look out for specifically? Make it a point to check hoses and belts, and make sure the antifreeze is clean and filled to the right level in order for the heating system to be working at optimal condition.

4. FOLLOW YOUR CAR’S MAINTENANCE PLAN

In a survey conducted by AAA, 62% of repair shops say more than half of the vehicles they service are behind schedule for routine maintenance. Furthermore, repair shops estimated customers who forget or ignore manufacturers’ recommended maintenance could save, on average, $100 or more per visit if they properly maintained their vehicles.

Regularly maintaining your car is an integral to keeping your car safe, ensuring it’s in good condition and extending the lifespan of your car. Following a regular inspection and maintenance schedule is important and Vehicle Mind’s regular maintenance reminders are the perfect solution for that kind of oversight. Which leads us to our next point...

5. USE VEHICLE MIND TO KEEP TABS ON YOUR ENGINE AND BATTERY STATUS

As mentioned above, cold weather demands a lot from your car’s engine, charging system, and battery. When it comes to your car battery, Billy recommends it be tested in the fall time to avoid surprises in the winter. You wouldn’t believe the number of drivers who’ve never had their car battery tested until it was too late. Don’t take that chance!

Thankfully Vehicle Mind tells you what your vehicle’s maintenance needs are while helping you keep tabs on its engine and battery status from your smartphone—and so much more! For example, if your car’s check engine light comes on, Vehicle Mind doubles as a virtual mechanic by explaining what’s wrong with your car in simple everyday terms.

It’s everything you need to enjoy fall with confidence and without any unexpected surprises!
