Summer is right around the corner and with pandemic restrictions easing up, many of us are considering planning summer road trips as a safer travel option. However, due to the lockdown, our cars stayed idle for long periods of time. So are they ready to take on the long road ahead? Don’t know where to start? That’s okay, we’ve got you covered!
Here are 7 things to do before hitting the road:
How do you know if your brakes need some attention? Check for any sounds. If your brakes are making any scary, squeaky sounds or feel sponge-like, it may be time to get your brakes inspected.
2. Check your tires
Make sure they’re inflated as per the guidelines in your vehicle’s owner’s manual. Can’t find the owner’s manual? You can also find this info on a sticker located in your car’s door jamb.
3. Test your exterior lights
Ensure all exterior lights of your car are in working order. This means headlights, blinkers, brake lights, hazard lights, and reverse lights. Most road trips will require nighttime driving, so replacing any burnt-out or broken lights before taking to the road is a must!
4. Check the A/C
Chances are you haven’t turned on your car’s A/C since last summer. Blast your car’s A/C to see whether cool air is actually spewing from the vents. Remember, it’s going to be a long drive!
5. Access to roadside assistance
If changing a flat tire sounds like a scary endeavor, driving with access to roadside assistance can be a reassuring way of knowing you’ll arrive at your destination safely.
6. Additional components to check on
It’s also a good idea to check that all fluids are topped up; this includes transmission, coolant, brake, and power steering fluids. Engine belts and hoses should be checked to ensure your car’s electrical, power steering, and cooling systems are working properly.
7. Get a seasonal inspection
If the above seems a little overwhelming, don’t fret! You can always book a seasonal inspection and leave the check-ups up to the experts. During the seasonal inspection, your mechanic will check your car’s engine for parts that may need cleaning, fixing, or replacing, ensuring that your car is in top shape before your trip. You should also book the inspection ahead of time in case something actually requires fixing beforehand!
